Mumbai: Opposition leaders in Maharashtra Friday met Governor K Sankaranarayanan and demanded dismissal of the state government over the police firing in Pune district which claimed three lives, saying the law and order situation had gone "beyond its control".

The 60-member delegation led by Leader of Opposition in State Legislative Assembly Eknath Khadse, included BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar, Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai, Diwakar Raote, MNS leader Bala Nandgaokar and others.

The delegation complained to the Governor that the law and order situation in the state had gone "beyond the control" of the state government.

Opposition leaders said there have been growing incidents of bomb blasts, Naxalism, murder, rape, gang rivalry, cyber crime and police firing in the state.

The delegation told the Governor that police had resorted to firing at three places in the state at Jalna-Ambad highway, at Mowad, in Nagpur district and at Maval in Pune district, resulting in death of innocent people. The government also suppressed the agitation at Jaitapur using force, they alleged.

The memorandum presented to the Governor alleged that Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Home Minister R R Patil sought to justify the firing by police.

Mentioning that there has been complete failure on the part of the government to maintain law and order in the state, the delegation demanded immediate dismissal of the state government.

The Governor told the delegation that he will discuss all the issues raised by the delegation with the Chief Minister.
