Nagpur: A whopping 84,599 cases in various
stages of litigation were settled at the third edition of Maha
Lok Adalat held in Nagpur.
Maha Lok Adalat is a concept introduced by the
Maharashtra judiciary against the backdrop of a huge pile up
of cases.
Altogether 1,29,460 cases, including 53,898 at
post-litigation and 75,562 at pre-litigation stages, were
taken up by judicial officers during the mega event held on
Sunday at district court premises in Naya Mandir.
With settlement of 84,599 cases in the course of eight
hours, about 17 per cent of pendency is reduced, judicial
officials observed.
Among the cases disposed of was that of a protracted
legal battle between a landlord and a tenant that lasted for
over four decades before it was finally settled.
The litigant Manilal Trivedi had filed a case against
his tenant Gopal Sawal for arrears of Rs 737 towards rent in
1969 and the case was dragging on in the district court.
The Nagpur District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and
City Police made intense efforts to trace legal heirs of
Trivedi who died during the course of litigation.
"It was a bit difficult to find them after such a long
gap. But our officials worked hard with the police to find
their addresses and settled the old dispute," said Nagpur DLSA
secretary Kishor Jaiswal who coordinated the Adalat in the
city.
Another instance was that of a stabbing case involving
two brothers which was also settled after 33 years of legal
battle between the accused Chandrashekhar Ghodke and his elder
sibling Harinarayan.
Justice Sharad Bobde of Bombay High Court inaugurated
the event in the presence of Justice Bhushan Dharmadhikari,
also from Bombay High Court.
