Nagpur: Elections to the 196 Municipal
Councils in Maharashtra will be held on December 8, the State
Election Commission announced on Tuesday.
The tenure of most of the Municipal Councils and
Municipal Panchayats was due to end between December 2011 and
February 2012 and therefore the elections of these civic
bodies has been scheduled for December 8, State Election
Commissioner Neela Satyanarayan told reporters here today.
She said since Latur and Chandrapur Municipal Councils
have been upgraded to Municipal Corporations, there will be no
election in these two present Municipal Councils.
A total of 4,303 seats would be at stake, with 50 percent
reservation for women, during the elections.
The election process will commence from November 16 with
the nominations remaining open till November 22. Scrutiny of
papers would be done on November 23 and the last date for
withdrawal of candidature is November 29, Satyanarayan said.
Counting of votes would be taken up immediately after
polling is over or in some case the next day, she added.
The model code of conduct comes into immediate effect.
