Mumbai: Maharashtra government has decided
to conduct an inquiry into the schools for the deaf, dumb and
handicapped which are not functioning properly despite getting
Government grants, the Legislative Council was told on Friday.
"An inquiry headed by an IAS-level officer would be
conducted in the matter. Those found guilty will face strict
action," Social Justice Minister, Shivajirao Moghe said.
Licences of such schools would also be cancelled, he
assured the Upper House while replying to a calling attention
motion moved by Keshavrao Mankar (BJP) and others.
The members cited the example of three "bogus" schools
in Katol, Nagpur district. These schools showed 185 disabled
students on their rolls, but not one of them was present
during an inspection, they said.
All these students were only on paper, the MLCs said.
Leader of Opposition Pandurang Phundkar, however,
suggested not to cancel their licences. Instead their
management should be handed over to competent organisations so
that students of nearby areas are not affected.
Accepting the suggestion, Moghe said after receiving
the inquiry report, such schools will be handed over to the
management of other schools.
