New Delhi: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will on Wednesday launch a protest against the ruling central and state governments during his two-day visit to the Vidarbha region of eastern Maharashtra.

Ahead of leaving for Maharashtra, Rahul this morning said that farmers contribute the maximum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' initiative and added that the government should help the farming community.

"The Prime Minister talks about 'Make in India'. Who contributes more than the farmers from Punjab in 'Make in India'? The poor contributes to 'Make in India', isn't that 'Make in India'? The Central government should help out the farmers," Gandhi told the media here.

"Farmers are the backbone of India. Wherever there is injustice towards the farmers, I will go there, listen to their problems and understand their pain," he added.

The Congress vice president will arrive in Nagpur this evening and begin a padayatra (footmarch) from Amravati tomorrow morning.

Gandhi will spearhead the Congress' protest against the Land Acquisition Bill, the problems of the farming community and other major issues during his visit.

He will tour Dhamangaon railway tehsil's Gunji and Shahapur villages, and Chandur railway tehsil's Ramgaon, Rajana and Tongalbad villages within a region of around 175 km.

The Congress leader will also undertake a 15-km-long foot-march in Amravati during the trip and is likely to visit homes of some farmers affected by unseasonal rains, drought and hailstorms in the state.
