Mumbai: The Central Railway on Tuesday said that it was ready to facilitate land to the Maharashtra government or the local civic bodies if they were willing to bear the cost of constructing skywalks alongside the railway tracks.
"We will facilitate land for construction of skywalks alongside or across the railway tracks to the state government or the municipal corporation if they are ready to bear the cost of it," Subodh Jain, General Manager of Central railway told reporters here.
The Central Railway has made the offer taking cognizance of the issue of large number of people crossing railway tracks at Thane and Mumbra.
Jain said fencing work between railway tracks is on to prevent people from crossing tracks.
In the past one year, 802 journey-cum-reservation tickets valued at Rs 11.4 lakh have been recovered 95 touts, who have been arrested.
"Cash worth Rs 2.79 lakh was also recovered from them," he added. Asked why the railway authority is not taking stern action against `bhajan mandalis` in local trains, Jain said "We cannot go against the public opinion."
