Mumbai: Heavy rainfall in coastal Konkan region for the last two days has disrupted road and rail traffic, with officials shifting 1,500 stranded train passengers to safety in Ratnagiri district on Sunday.

The passengers were on board the Madhusagar Express, which was stranded near Nivsar in Ratnagiri district after a portion of the railway track caved in last night.

Early today, 20 buses were arranged for them and they were shifted to nearby Adavli station, police said. The passengers were provided biscuits and water from Ratnagiri.

There were two landslides, on either side of Nivsar station as well. Kolhapur district in western Maharashtra has also experienced heavy rainfall since last two days.

Fifty villages in the district have been cut off due to heavy rains and the Panchganga river is flowing above the danger mark, police said.
