Mumbai: Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh`s
statement that government may consider putting in place
additional environmental safeguards to ensure safety of the
proposed nuclear reactor in Jaitapur after the tsunami in
Japan, is a farce, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav
Thackeray said here on Wednesday.

"Ramesh has announced they are reviewing all safety
systems and designs. He pretended to work in public interest
on the Navi Mumbai airport and Lavasa hill city projects but
gave clean chit to the projects," Uddhav said in a statement
here.
Terming the minister a "puppet", the Sena leader said his
party will continue to oppose the project.

It is unfortunate that the Prithviraj Chavan government
in the state is still asleep even after the tragedy in Japan,
Uddhav said.

"Based on the technical reviews the NPCIL does, we will
certainly be in touch with them and if additional safeguards
have to be built in as part of the environmental clearance, we
will certainly look at it," Ramesh had announced in Delhi
yesterday.

He was reacting to a question on whether the government
is going to have a re-look at the project in the wake of the
deadly earthquake that caused severe damage in a nuclear
facility in Japan.
Uddhav recently met the Chief Minister after the latter`s
visit to Jaitapur to complain about the police atrocities in
the villages.

Uddhav said his party was with local people, who are
opposing the project on the grounds of environmental issues,
possible health hazards and fear of loss of livelihood due to
land acquisition.
