Nagpur: Unidentified persons allegedly broke into the palatial residence of a Congress leader in the posh Laxmi Nagar area here and decamped with cash worth Rs 13 lakh, police said.

According to police, the burglars sneaked into the house yesterday, when the Congressman Anant Gharad was not at home and his wife had gone to Mumbai.

They decamped with the cash from a briefcase that was kept inside an almirah. The briefcase was later found abandoned near the rear part of his house, police said.

Gharad, a city Congress functionary, is also an office-bearer of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC). He is considered close to former Maharashtra chief ministers late Shankarrao and his son Ashok Chavan. Gharad, who runs a travel agency and some other business ventures, is the trustee of Nagpur Improvement Trust.

Following the incident, a dog squad was put into action to trace the thieves, however, no clue has been found yet, police said.
