Rs 2,000 cr package for farmers historic: Chavan

Nagpur: Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has described the Rs 2,000 crore package for cotton, soya and paddy growers that was announced by the state
recently as unprecedented.

For soya and paddy growers, the relief is restricted to those areas where the yield was less than 25 percent, but for cotton growers there are no conditions and they will get Rs 4,000 per hectare, Chavan said at the post-legislature session
press conference here yesterday.

Such package was "never seen before" and not likely to be seen again, he said.

The chief minister said that a Dry Land Farming Commission will be set up, for building irrigation facilities in dry areas of the state.

As to onion, Chavan said that centre has assured to lift the conditions for minimum support price (MSP). MLAs of various parties had demanded lifting of cap on MSP and the ban on exports as onion prices have crashed.

Listing achievements of the ruling alliance during the winter session, Chief Minister said the Congress-NCP government managed to achieve unanimity over issues such as Indu Mill land and Belgaum.
