Satara: A Right to Information (RTI) activist and member of Anna Hazare`s anti-graft movement was injured after an unidentified assailant attacked him with a sword in this Maharashtra district, police said here on Monday.

"Popat Barge, 37, was attacked in Phaltan village. He has suffered a minor head injury and is in a stable condition in the local hospital," Assistant Police Inspector Shankarrao Damse told a news agency.

Barge, a member of Hazare`s Bhrashtachar Virodhi Jan Andolan Nyas, is using RTI to stop illegal construction in the district.

Phaltan village is 65 km from the district headquarters of Satara.

In January this year, RTI activist Arun Mane, pursuing land scams around Pune, was seriously injured in an attack by an unidentified assailant.

Mane, who owns a footwear shop in Talegaon-Dabhade, around 40 km from Pune, was hit with a blunt weapon soon after he opened his shop. He had sustained injuries on his forehead, chest and hands.

In 2010, six RTI activists were killed and several assaulted in Maharashtra, according to a report by a Mumbai-based NGO, Movement against Intimidation, Threats and Revenge against Activists (MITRA).
