School boy drowns in water tank in Gadchiroli

A tenth grade student from the government ashram school in Sonsari village here drowned in a water tank, police said today.

Gadchiroli: A tenth grade student from the government ashram school in Sonsari village here drowned in a water tank, police said today.

Sumit Kumoti (16) from Kurkheda taluka in the district, was fished out from the tank last evening, they said.

According to villagers, the teenager was missing from school since the last two days but neither the school administration initiate a search for him nor did they inform his parents.

The matter came to light after locals found a floating corpse in the tank and identified it but relatives and villagers refused to hand over the body for post mortem demanding action against the school staff, police said.

Later, on the intervention of the Tehsildar, the body was allowed to be shifted.
Locals allege that several ashram schools in the district do not have basic amenities like bathrooms and toilets and students have to go to nearby tanks, nullahs etc for taking bath.

In the past also, some students have died due to drowning in nullahs while taking bath or washing their clothes, they said.
