Mumbai: A local court on Friday extended till
December 7 the police custody of a self-proclaimed tantrik,
arrested for raping six teenagers and their domestic help,
allowing the investigators to question him for four more days.
Mehdi Kasim Shaikh was arrested on Sunday for allegedly
raping six cousins for over two years, after he had convinced
their mothers - three siblings - that he could prevent any
possible complications during the girls` future pregnancy and
childbirth, police said. Their domestic servant was also
sexually assaulted by him.
"Shaikh was produced before a local court as his police
custody expired today. On raiding the premises of his Kalyan
flat, we found Rs 87,30,000 in cash, and gold and diamond
jewellery worth Rs 13,70,000.
We suspect that he owns a few more properties in West
Bengal, the place from where the accused claims he hails
from," said Khanderao Patil, Senior Inspector J J Marg Police
"We also want to know if he had exploited any other
families. As his further custody was necessary, the court
granted us four more days to question him," he added.
Police were also probing if any of the accused`s
family members reside or had any links with neighbouring
country Bangladesh, he said.
Shaikh had allegedly fleeced the victims` family of
over Rs one crore over a period of time and stashed it in a
flat he had rented in Kalyan, police said.
Shaikh told them he had no intention of raping the girls
when he began their "treatment" in 2006. He had said he got
tempted two years later, police said.
The accused had threatened to punish them with black
magic if they told anyone. As a result of the rape, three of
the girls got pregnant and were taken for abortions by Shaikh,
As per the FIR, Shaikh, a graduate in Urdu from a
university in Uttar Pradesh, had come to the city in 1999 and
came in touch with the family after in 2002 when he was hired
to teach Urdu to the six girls.
