Stampede in Kolhapur temple fair kills three

Kolhapur: In a freak accident, three devotees lost their lives lost their lives in a stampede during the famous Laxmi yatra, organised at Turkewadi in Chandgad tehsil of Kolhapur district.

As per initial reports, chariot rope snapped during the procession leading to a stampede that left three persons dead and close to 20 others injured.

The chariot festival at Turkewadi is held only once in 9 years and attracts lakhs of pilgrims from the entire region.

Although, Turkewadi and Chandgad are in Maharashtra but as the district headquarters, Kolhapur, is over 100 kilometres away, the entire area is depended on Belgaum city just across the border in Karnataka for all practical purposes.

The injured have been rushed to hospitals in Belgaum, 20 kilometres away.

Police has cordoned off the entire area; the situation is said to be in control.
