Thane Municipal Corporation opposition crys foul; says Shiv Sena mayor must resign

The Congress-NCP opposition in the Thane Municipal Corporation came down heavily on the Shiv Sena on Thursday and declared that its mayor Sanjay More has been getting proposals passed despite uproar and noice in the house.

Thane: The Congress-NCP opposition in the Thane Municipal Corporation came down heavily on the Shiv Sena on Thursday and declared that its mayor Sanjay More has been getting proposals passed despite uproar and noice in the house.

Addressing a press conference here, opposition leader Hanumant Jagdale (NCP) told reporters that since 2012, after the local civic body came into being, the mayor never bothered to honour views of elected representatives.

He said that the opposition had objected to the mayor's style of functioning several times and also written to the Commissioner but to no avail.

Citing an example of the mayor's misdeeds, he said that the proposal to hike tax and cess despite an absence of proper civic amenities, was passed by the ruling Shiv Sena, after brushing aside all resistance from Congress-NCP opposition members.

Jagdale said that all general bodies held during this period were void, needs to be considered illegal and decisions revoked.

He said that the mayor who took these decisions had no right to be in office and demanded mayor Sanjay More's resignation.

The Thane Municipal Corporation, he said, had paid Rs 26 crore to the Thane collector for acquiring land for a sewerage project ten years ago, but there has been no progress in the project and the money which could have been utilised elsewhere, lies idle.

He also cited another instance where the ruling Shiv Sena wanted to give a four-acre piece of land to the Shankara Netralaya without any conditions whatsoever, he said.

Thane unit NCP president Manoj Pradhan said that his party is not opposed to the eye hospital coming to Thane but the issue whether the hospital should be given such a huge piece of land at the nominal rate of Re 1.

He said that since terms and conditions of the proposed hospital project were not placed before corporation members, there grounds to suspect something fishy in the deal.
