Mumbai: The nine-car suburban services have
completed 50 years of operation on Western Railway.

The 9-car trains were introduced on March 2, 1961 and
have rendered continuous services since then, ferrying lakhs
of commuters day in and day out.

Initially, 3-car EMU suburban trains used to ply on
Mumbai suburban route, which were followed by six-car EMU
trains.

Eight-car trains too served the city for a brief period.
To cope up with the increasing demands of the city, and with
the expansion of suburbs, a need for longer EMU trains was
felt and 9-car trains were introduced.

But city`s growth always out-paces the increase in train
capacity and now WR has 12-car and even 15-car trains. The
latter have been introduced for the first time in India, an
official release said.
