WR recovers Rs 3.88 cr from ticketless travelers

Mumbai: Western Railway has recovered Rs 3.88 crore from ticketless travelers in September this year, which is 20 per cent more than the amount recovered in corresponding month last year.

"In its endeavour to provide better service to its bonafide rail users and also to check ticketless travel and other such irregularities, WR conducted regular checks during September, 2011 in which 1.31 lakh cases were detected.

"Altogether 1,31,633 cases of ticketless/irregular travel including unbooked luggage were detected resulting into a recovery of Rs. 388.76 lakhs which is 20 per cent more than the corresponding month of the last year," an official release said.

Similarly, 151 cases of illegal transfer of reserved tickets were detected and an amount of Rs. 120305 was realised, it said.

During the same period, 963 beggars and unauthorised hawkers were apprehended. They were evicted from railway premises. Eight persons were sent to jail, it said.

During September, 2011, 160 checks were conducted against touts and other anti-social elements by Western Railway. As a result, 481 persons were apprehended and got prosecuted under various sections of Railways Act.
