New Delhi: A group fighting for justice for
1984 anti-Sikh riots victims today welcomed the Delhi High
Court's direction to a lower court to complete the trial of
all pending cases relating to the carnage within six months.
Welcoming the decision, 1984 Riots Action Committee
president Manjit Singh asked the Congress not to "award"
Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler, two leaders accused in the
riots, by giving them posts in the party and elsewhere.
"While Kumar has been made a member of the Commonwealth
Committee, Tytler is made Congress' incharge in Bihar and is
even accompanying Rahul Gandhi on his visit to the state. So
we ask the party why these persons are given posts even though
cases continue against them in courts," Manjit told reporters.
Another member Onkar Singh Thapar claimed the riot
victims were not "properly" compensated and asked the Delhi
and the Central governments why the compensation amount
announced earlier were "not given" to them.
Manjit, also the city chief of Shiromani Akali Dal, said
the party will gherao the Delhi Assembly when it meets next
month for the budget session for not giving compensation
amount as announced by the state government.
A High Court bench headed by Chief Justice A P Shah had
said yesterday, "We direct that the trial (of the pending
anti-Sikh riots cases) will be conducted as expeditiously as
possible and will be completed within six months."
