New Delhi: Backing former Telecom Minister A Raja`s plea to be summoned as a witness before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), BJP on Sunday said a meeting of the panel should be called at the earliest to take a final call on summoning the "key player" in the 2G scam.

Senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha, who is a member of the JPC, has written to panel Chairman PC Chako asking him to call a meeting "at the earliest" to decide on summoning Raja as witness.

"Sri Raja was a key player in the 2G scam...He should have been called before the JPC even otherwise, but now that he has himself sent the request for deposing before the JPC, it is absolutely imperative to provide him with an opportunity to do so," Sinha said in his letter.

Raja has also been blamed for the 2G scam by other witnesses before the special CBI court.

Chacko is apparently against calling Raja as witness. He has told the committee members that as an accused Raja has legal protection and cannot make fresh revelations before any committee. Therefore, there was no point in calling Raja.

Congress members in the JPC are against calling Raja as witness as his deposition could be used by opposition members, including BJP and the Left, in cornering the government.

Raja has maintained that he had kept the Prime Minister`s Office and others informed about his decisions on 2G licencing issue.
