New Delhi: The Income Tax authorities in Chennai quizzed DMK leader Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV managing director Sharad Kumar on Thursday in response to summons pertaining to the 2G spectrum scam case.
The enquiry focused on the Rs 200 crore transaction from DB Realty -- whose proprietor Balwa is a co-accused in the 2G spectrum case -- to Kalaignar TV, IT officials said on conditions of anonymity.
The Income Tax authorities questioned the duo for about 90 minutes. Both were questioned by a Deputy Director level officer, sources added.
The DMK leader, at the end of the one-and-a-half hour questioning, left the IT office through a rear exit.
A special CBI court trying the 2G spectrum case on Tuesday exempted Kanimozhi and Kumar from personal appearance before ED for two days in connection with the 2G spectrum scam case. The court allowed her to appear before Chennai Income Tax Office to respond to summons for alleged tax evasion.
As per the Supreme Court directions, the ED, CBI and Income Tax department are conducting separate probes into the 2G scam.
The ED had summoned the duo for questioning about the transfer of Rs 200 crore to Kalaignar TV, in which both Kanimozhi and Kumar hold a 20 percent stake each. Some other transactions are also under the scanner of ED in the 2G scam.
The Enforcement Directorate will soon issue new dates for questioning in connection with the 2G scam, preferably after the May 14. Sources say the duo will be called for questioning around May 20.
