New Delhi: A total of 54 special CBI courts
out of the sanctioned 71 have started functioning in the country, the government Wednesday told the Lok Sabha.
"The central government decided to set up 71 additional
special courts exclusively for the trial of CBI cases.
"Out of these 71 courts, concurrences of the central/
state governments have been received for 70 courts, out of
which 54 courts have started functioning and rest are under
process of being established," Minister of State in Prime
Minister`s Office V Narayanasamy said in a written reply.
While four courts are still to get functional in Odisha,
two in Assam, three in Delhi and five in Andhra Pradesh among
others, the concurrence of the state government has "not" been
received for one special court in Shimla in Himachal Pradesh,
the minister said.
"The matter (regarding those courts which are still to
get operational) is being monitored by the government for
early establishment/operationalisation of these courts. The
same is being monitored by the Supreme Court...The matter was
last heard on January 24, this year and the next date of
hearing is April 24,2012," he said.
