New Delhi: Sixty-seven sculptures have been
seized by the CBI and other law enforcement agencies in past
three years but the ASI is yet to estimate the value of the
seized objects, the government said today.

It said a total of 14 sculptures have been seized from
different states between 2007 and 2009.

"Law enforcing agencies such as police and CBI have
seized a number of idols/antiquities/artifacts during the past
years. The Archaeological Survey of India has not estimated
the value of the seized objects," Minister of State for
Planning V Narayanasamy, who also holds ad-hoc charge of the
Culture Ministry, told the Lok Sabha.

While the CBI seized 14 sculptures in 2007, it recovered
one in 2008 and 52 in 2009, the Minister said.

He said to ensure protection of the ancient sculptures
and artefacts in centrally-protected monuments, sites and
museums, watch and ward staff have been deployed.

"Their strength has been supplemented by deployment of
private security guards, state police guards and Central
Industrial Security Force," he said.
