76 CBI officers facing trial, inquiries

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) may be the premier agency probing corruption, but 76 of its own officers are in the dock on a wide variety of charges.

Minister of State in the Prime Minister`s Office V Narayanasamy told the Rajya Sabha that departmental enquiries had been launched against 46 CBI officers while 30 others were facing trial.

These officers range from a deputy inspector general to a constable.
Many CBI officers facing trial have been accused of demanding and accepting bribe, according to details provided by the minister in a written statement.

Some have been charged with criminal misconduct, cheating, manipulating birth records and forging caste certificates.

One officer allegedly sent lewd text message to a female colleague.
