939 infiltrators held along Bangla border

Shillong: Altogether 939 infiltrators were apprehended along the Indo-Bangladesh this year till June.

“Even though there are no significant incidences of infiltration on India’s borders with Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and China, the Indo-Bangladesh border is prone to infiltration. Till June, about 939 infiltrators were apprehended on the Indo-Bangladesh border while the figure for 2009 was 2460,” an official statement said today.

It said the Centre has adopted a multi-pronged approach to contain cross-border infiltration which include round the clock surveillance and patrolling on the borders and establishment of observation posts, construction of border fencing and flood lighting, introduction of modern and hi-tech surveillance equipment, upgradation of intelligence set up and coordination with the state governments and concerned intelligence agencies.

On militancy, the statement said, during 2010, about 121 violent incidents occurred in Assam as against 263 in 2009.

In Manipur, violent incidents triggered by militant groups were 183 during 2010 as against 362 in 2009.

Two security personnel were killed till June, 2010 in Assam as against 20 in 2009. Two security personnel were also killed in Manipur till June, as against 7 in 2009.

Civilian casualties were 23 in Assam during 2010, against 99 in 2009, and 16 in Manipur in 2010 as against 51 in 2009.
