New Delhi: Days after raking up the 1984 anti-Sikh riots issue, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is seeking to claim credit for bringing the public focus back on the tragedy.
The ruling AAP has put up posters in parts of the city, claiming to bring to justice the perpetrators behind the riots.
The posters read: “1984 ke Sikh katleaam ka ab hoga insaaf (justice will now be done for the massacre of Sikhs in 1984)”.
The posters carry Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal`s photo and his name.
The posters surfaced after the Kejriwal government announced its move to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the 1984 riots cases.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has approved the formation of the SIT.
Only recently, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had admitted during a TV interview that `some Congressmen were probably involved in the riots`.
The comments triggered huge controversy and led to protests by Sikh groups, who demanded that Rahul name the Congressmen and action be taken against them.
Congress leaders Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar are among those who are facing trial for their alleged role in 1984 riots.
While it is welcome that the Delhi government is reopening the probe into the riot-related cases in a bid to ensure long-delayed justice; however, the move to highlight “katleaam” hints at an attempt to capitalise on the issue ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
It is no secret that the Aam Aadmi Party is aiming at the General Elections and hoping to repeat its success in Delhi at the national level.
