New Delhi: Nearly 2,000 cases related to alleged corruption were registered by CBI in the last three years, the government said on Wednesday.

"CBI has registered 1,997 cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 during the last three years i.E. 2010, 2011 and 2012 and during the current year up to January 31, 2013," Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions V Narayanasamy told Lok Sabha in a written reply.

Of the total of 1,997 corruption cases registered by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), as many as 650 were filed in 2010, 600 in 2011 and 695 during last year, he said.

As many as 52 cases under the PC Act have been registered by CBI in January this year, the Minister said.

The investigating agency has filed closure report in 129 cases. It included 44 in 2010, 38 in 2011, 45 in 2012 and two in January this year.

In reply to another question, Narayanasamy said that CBI has filed charge sheet in 2,229 cases in various courts across the country in the last three years. Of these, 842 charge sheets were filed in 2010, 701 in 2011 and 686 in 2012, he said.

Most of the cases are motivated, false and just for statistics. Honest, upright, tough officers have merely been rounded up under criminal cases even when there were human errors without any implications. This is just an eyewash exercise as the real culprits continue with brazenness. They work like a coterie and remain unexposed. Most booked are mere victims of misfortune or some rivalry. Only when some officer discharges a proper duty, the public will complain and then the officer gets targeted by CBI. The result: working of bureaucracy from top to bottom has come to a grinding halt as almost all tough officers have been cornered. This is a strategy by Congress just to show figures to public before the elections. But no such gimmicks would help them. This is only going to harm the country. See the number of VRS over the last just 1 year. All intelligent and knowledgeable officers are leaving the `steel frame`....Shame yet true !
