New York: The UPA government that has been facing brickbats from the opposition parties has got a compliment from BJP leader LK Advani for its flagship programme, MGNREGA, which he said has helped empower rural people and revive economic growth.

Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), enacted in August 2005, has been touted as a flagship programme by the UPA government.

Advani said the scheme is the largest cash for work programme in the world and responds to the needs of 53 million poor rural households by ensuring 100 days employment to them per year with at least 50 per cent of the work reserved for women.

"This programme has helped break down social inequalities, empower rural people, build up rural infrastructure and revive economic growth," Advani said during his address on 'Social Development' at the General Debate in the Third Committee, which focusses on social, humanitarian and cultural affairs, at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly here on Tuesday.

Advani is part of a group of visiting Indian Parliamentarians who will be participating in various sessions of the General Assembly.

He listed efforts made by India to help women and vulnerable groups, particularly in rural areas, initiatives in the field of education, health interventions and programmes to assist persons with disabilities.

He said in India, achieving inclusive growth underpinned by empowerment of people, especially women, good governance, and investments in social sectors, education and health, skills training, affordable housing, are a major focus.

Given that 65 per cent of India's population lives in rural areas, special emphasis has been placed on rural development initiatives, he added.

_Rahul Gundha should take some lesson from Advani ! All know that the MNREGA is a failed programme, but at UN he still praised it. Unlike Rahul who termed Hindus as rising terrorists and PM MMS at Sherk-el-shamir where he admitted RAW`s hand in BAlochisthan

This is what UPA Govt. is doing. The so called opposition led by Modi`s BJP is misleading the nation. The Kejriwal group is playing with the emotion of the nation. I`m not pro Congress but I dont feel any thing wrong to say that now a days it become fashion to attack President, PM. No respect towards the representetive of the nation.

If the BJP has this vision, on all issues confronting the nation, Indian democracy has won. Both Congress and BJP must work united on all national issues confronting India, people of India give both BJP and Congress a chance. The way the BJP does obstruction to the very temple of democracy – the parliament and oppose each and everything proposed by UPA is too bad for the country. It’s a matter of common sense that the UPA which were pulled back by the regional party(TMC of Bengal) could not take the reforms forward but when they are out, the UPA is coming out with lot many good policies which has proved positive(Rupee getting its strength, subsidies reduced, govt to have more funds for nation building, Services, create more employment etc. If they want the Indian economy to go out of gear, they could have given LPG cylinders for free, Petrol and diesel at half the price using all tax payers money. If they have acted firmly is that Dr Manmohal Singh and Mr Chidambaram are serious of their job, regardless of votes going against them – possibly they may not win the ensuing State elections but people will realize and feel the benefits of their decision at some stage. In any case, we Indians must see one of the National parties(Congress or BJP) come to power and not a bunch of self centered regional parties.

LK Adwani is representing India to UN and speaks for India and he was India`s Dy PM so he know his dignity and responsibility and most important he is not Narendra Modi who represent a small province of India and always speaks as per his mindset as a frog of pound.
