Madurai: Nearly 100 advocates staged a demonstration in front of the District Court here today and boycotted courts, condemning the reported assault on a lawyer by police on February 6 and demanding action against them.

Advocate Association President Dharmar alleged that the lawyer, on his way to his house on his vehicle, was stopped by Inspector Gopalakrishan, who demanded the relevant documents. Though he produced them and also identified himself, a wordy duel ensued and he was assaulted. He was later taken to a police station, but no case was registered.

However police alleged that the lawyer also attacked the inspector.

Both have been admitted to a private hospital.

The association later passed a resolution, demanding suspension of Gopalakrishnan and Additional Commissioner of Police Inbamani and said they would continue the agitation till these personnel were transferred.
