Bangalore: One of India’s best know aerospace scientist Professor Roddam Narasimha has resigned from the Space Commission to protest against the Union Government’s decision to blacklist former ISRO chief G Madhavan Nair and three others for their role in the Antrix-Devas deal.

Narasimha was part of Prime Minister's High Powered Committee to probe the Antrix-Devas contract. Narasimha conducted the probe along with Planning Commission member and former cabinet secretary BK Chaturvedi. The two-member panel was set up on February 10, 2011 and the panel submitted its report on March 12, 2011.

As per a Deccan Chronicle report, prior to submitting his resignation to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Narasimha reportedly wrote to him that ‘public humiliation’ of the former technocrats was unjustified.

As part of the Space Commission, Narasimha was among those who formulated India’s space policy and had important role in the PSLV and Chandrayaan Mission, among others. ISRO Chief Dr K Radhakrishnan also officiates the chairman of the Space Commission.

Narasimha said that the report on Antrix-Devas deal had only pointed out lapses and suggested measures to prevent their recurrence and had not found any evidence of wrong-doing or fraud for personal gain.

Talking to a newspaper, the Bangalore-based scientist said that he is deeply distressed over the humiliation heaped on those who had spent their lives working for the nation.

"I think the Space Commission should also undergo reforms process and therefore it seems best that a new Commission implement these reforms,” he said.

However, the newspaper, quoting sources at the ISRO, says that Professor Narasimha was upset with the government for having constituted another panel – under former CVC Pratyush Sinha - to probe the Antrix-Devas deal and for the action taken on Nair on the basis of the Sinha panel report.

Narasimha had been vocal about his opposition to the black-listing of top scientists. "I think the scientists should have been given a chance. There's a strong misunderstanding that should first be corrected before any action is contemplated…Blame (Nair and others) for what? Let's first get that clear. I think the debate is now going on without understanding what the blame is for. I think it would be good to release the reports," he said.

Meanwhile, the scientist fraternity in the country has termed Narasimha’s exit as a big loss for country’s space programme.

Parliament, GOI and Media - Intellectuals need to understand that education, science & technology in India have far more importance than other business for the trio forms the basis of all advancement. It would be too late if educationists, scientists and technologists are spared from Media - Intellectuals debate and discussion. Regards

There is difference between science and politics. Political people fight in front and they don`t hide anything for tomorrow. Scientists are friends always in front but behind the screen they are the true eaters of our resources. Science & technology is surviving in India because of few patriots other wise it would have gone to dogs. Since majority of administrators don`t understand the style of science, the entire game is seen as if played always in black and white. In the case of Antrix - Devas deal there is a hidden conspiracy. Let GOI arrange for an open debate in Vigyan Bhavan asking Dr. Goverdhan Mehta and former CVC Mr. Pratyush Sinha to sit on the dias. Thereafter call me. My name and address is registered in the Parliament. I will show the world - politicians are far better than the dirty scientists and the so called watch dogs. Regards

Dr R Narasimha and the former Cabinet Secretary who prepared the first report were correct in their position for they analysed things properly for further discussion amongst the scientists and administrators of the concern business but the entry of the former CVC Pratyush Sinha and Dr. Goverdhan Mehta spoiled the entire approach for their loaded selfishness. The background of both the people suggests that they are not good man for (1) just after retirement the former CVC claimed that two of three officers in India are corrupt. (2) Dr. Goverdhan Mehta did kill a scholar in his laboeratory by asking him to perform a dangerous experiment alone and also spoiled the professional life of other post doc who was working with him simply because he could nt be used by him - according to him. Both Mr PS and Dr. Goverdhan Mehta did have an understanding for the former had full report. In the second set of release it is clearly seen that both acted under prejudice. Further the lapses seen on the part of Secretary - DOS is remarkable. Or he too entered in some form of understanding with these two. The entire episode has undermined the role of the Cabinet Secretariat in one way or other. Regards

Our PM refused to give clearance even after several months to file cases and prosecute A.Raja in 2G scam. Moreover he has given a clean chit to A.Raja, but now why Raja is in jail, PM should explain. We the voters of India deserve to suffer in the hands of UPA looters for not promoting an alternative best party/politicians into power.
