AIIMS accepts Valiathan panel suggestions on modernisation

The AIIMS institute body has accepted "in principle" majority of the recommendations made by the Valiathan committee on modernisation of the premier institution.

New Delhi: The AIIMS institute body has
accepted "in principle" majority of the recommendations made
by the Valiathan committee on modernisation of the premier
institution.

The Government, however, is yet to take a final view
on implementation of recommendations of the committee, Union
Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said in a statement in the
Lok Sabha today.

The minister said the Centre had not contemplated
privatisation of the AIIMS. "We are conscious of the fact that
this is one of the premier institutes of the country providing
free patient care of the highest quality to the poor coming
from the across the country," he said.

"I would also like to make it clear that the
recommendations of the Valiathan committee would be
implemented by the Government only after a thorough
examination and consultation with all stakeholders," he said.

It should be ensured that AIIMS continues to serve the
objectives for which it was established and the interests of
the common man are protected, Azad said.

The Valiathan committee had made 38 recommendations on
modernisation of the premier institute.
