Jalandhar: Justice eventually prevailed for a
74-year-old woman, after a local court ordered relief in form
of monthly maintenance allowance and ensuring re-entry into
her own house.
A tribunal of Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Jalandhar-I
under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents & Senior Citizens
Act 2007, enacted by the Punjab Government last year ordered
Kanwaljit Singh to pay monthly maintenance allowance to his
mother Gurcharan Kaur(74).
In her complaint to the tribunal Kaur alleged that her
son Kanwaljit Singh was harassing her and even had thrown out
her and her ailing husband Sukhinder Singh from their own
house.
She stated that her husband Sukhinder Singh was
diagnosed for rectum cancer and undergone operation in 2007,
after which he remained bed-ridden and instead of paying
attention to his ailing father, her son, a local cable
operator started harassing him and forcibly tried to snatch
the documents related to the house.
Finally, the parents left their house, due to excessive
harassment by their son and were living with their daughter,
Gurcharan Kaur said.
Tribunal of SDM, Jalandhar-I, RP Singh issued order on
July 30, in which he imposed a Maintenance of Rs 10,000 per
month under the Act.
Apart from monthly Maintenance Allowance, SDM also
stated in his order "since house belongs to Gursharan Kaur and
it is not ancestral property of the respondent, she is
entitled to retain the house during her life time and
Kanwaljit Singh ensure safe and secured entry in the house
for his parents".
