Jammu: After halting temporarily for a few hours, the Amarnath yatra resumed on Wednesday evening.

The first batch of 1,272 pilgrims, including 233 women and 32 children, had this morning left for the Himalayan cave shrine of Amarnath in South Kashmir from here.

They were however stopped midway in Udhampur due to the tense situation prevailing in the Kashmir Valley.

Government sources said additional forces called in for deployment along the yatra route had failed to reach Anantnag by the time the first batch of pilgrims was ready to cross the town. Anantnag had yesterday witnessed violent protests against the killing of civilians in alleged CRPF firing.

The yatra, which was halted as a precautionary measure, resumed after the arrival of the forces.
