Anna Hazare welcomes Sonia’s response
Sonia Gandhi had asserted that she did not support or encourage politics of “smear campaign”.
New Delhi: A day after Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi wrote back to him saying that she did not support or encourage politics of “smear campaign”, Anna Hazare, Thursday, thanked her for the response, saying that he is pleased that Sonia doesn’t endorse such means.
Sonia’s letter was in response to a note sent by the veteran Gandhian to her, on Monday, in which he said that "Corrupt forces in the country appear to have united to derail the process of drafting an anti-corruption law through the joint committee."
Hazare had also complained against a Congress general secretary, apparently Digvijay Singh, saying that he had been making “irresponsible statements” over the past few days. He also accused an unnamed minister, seemingly HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, who is also a member of Lokpal committee, of making “false statements” about the civil society representatives having "succumbed" to government`s pressure and "diluted" the law.
Responding to Hazare, Sonia wrote: "As for the statements appearing in the media, let me assure you that I do not support nor encourage the politics of smear campaigns.”
“I strongly support the institution of a Lokpal that is consistent with the practices and conventions of our Parliamentary democracy,” she said, adding that she is aware of the dire need to combat graft and that he (Hazare) should not doubt her commitment in the fight for probity in public life.
Satisfied with her response, Hazare said, "Sonia Gandhi has written to me. I was happy to read her letter. Sonia Gandhi has written in her letter that she never supported nor will support those who are attacking Anna Hazare."
