Armed Forces Tribunal rejects Lt Col`s petition

The Armed Forces Tribunal today dismissed the petition of a Lieutenant Colonel seeking quashing of his court martial and the sentence awarded to him for demanding a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a civilian contractor.

dismissed the petition of a Lieutenant Colonel seeking
quashing of his court martial and the sentence awarded to him
for demanding a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a civilian contractor.

Lt Col Deepak Bali was recommended to be dismissed from
service by a General Court Martial (GCM) for demanding money
from a contractor who was awarded a contract for maintenance
of infrastructure inside a naval base.

As Garrison Engineer, Bali was in-charge of the Military
Engineering Service (MES) at Vasconaval base in Goa and had
awarded the contract in 2003-04.

The Tribunal Bench headed by Justice S S Kulshreshtha and
Lt Gen (retd) S S Dhillon dismissed the petition saying "we
don`t find any ground to interfere in the GCM."

After the GCM had pronounced its sentence, the officer
was dismissed from service.
