Army Chief claims he was offered Rs 14 crore bribe Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: Army Chief General VK Singh has made a sensational disclosure.

In an interview to a leading English daily, Gen Singh claimed that he was offered a bribe of Rs 14 crore by an equipment lobbyist. Defence Minister AK Antony was apprised of the matter, the Army Chief added.

Gen Singh described the state of affairs in the Army as “shocking”, saying the same led to conditions wherein an attempt was made to bribe the Army Chief.

The lobbyist, who recently retired from the Army, was ready to bribe the Army Chief if he approved the acquisition of 600 sub-standard vehicles of a particular make.

According to the General, the Army had already acquired 7,000 such vehicles over the years at exorbitant prices. While the vehicles were sold to the Army, the manufacturer created no proper facility for the servicing and maintenance of the vehicles.

“Just imagine, one of these men had the gumption to walk up to me and tell me that if I cleared the tranche, he would give me Rs 14 crore. He was offering a bribe to me, to the Army Chief. He told me that people had taken money before me and they will take money after me,” Gen Singh told The Hindu.

“I was shocked. If somebody comes and tells you, you will get so much, what can you do?” he added.

In response to a question, Gen Singh said “obviously somewhere our standards of probity and integrity have fallen”, indicating the bad state of affairs in the Army.

Commenting on the date of birth controversy involving him, Gen Singh said his action against corruption in the Army led to him being targeted. He added that “the hand behind the drama” will soon be revealed.

A serious allegation. It brings some questions to the fore that need to be answered before any mud slinging. 1. Does the so called lobbyist really have any connections with any political party? When was the offer made? Did the person convey that he/she was acting on behalf of any person? Was the issue discussed with the MoD by the Gen? Why was this issue kept under wrap so long and is he blowing the whistle before the play end (his retirement). He may be right or wrong but he has chosen the wrong timing. I am sure something good for the defence in particular and country at large will come out of this if the govt probes and finds ways to prevent such cases in the future. Such issues definitely tarnish the image of men in uniform. SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS IF THIS IS TRUE.

JAMBUNATHAN JAYARAMANon HINDU way back, is nothing - Hyderabad
Ya it is very correct. The lobbyist or the so called middleman/ad visor always claims that you alone can not set right the system-Will induce one to tow his lane.In many a cases such happenings never get reported owing to so many reactions and repercussions. LET THERE BE AN INQUIRY-fix the person concerned-Black mark the company. The punishment must be such it creates tremors in the minds of future guys trying to infuse immoral ethics to top brasses. It is worth recollecting the OLD Article on Bureaucratic Corruption by Prof..INDERESAN in Hindu way back.A wonderful article must be made as a compulsory paper in all sorts training to top brasses and the future Men to occupy such Decision making posts. One glance will make any one to retrospect and keep him away from all these sorts of enticement Meak minded chaps succumb to these inducement and justify their deeds.Another solution Discourage Plump .Post retirement appointments such Officers Whose integrity is under cloud. These things are happening because the retired officer can easily get entry to all top brasses mainly being familiar in the Army/Posting. Curb that.

This is very common practice in Army. As Sagar is a Army area and there is a MES. There are many MES contractors too. For tender and payments from Garrison Engineer to a low grade officer everyone has fixed amount of Share in the contract received by Civil Contractors. Without this no body can take tenders. This is a vicious circle. This is India and Army is the most corrupted entity over here. Jai Hind.
