New Delhi: A journalist and a camera person were attacked by Asaram Bapu’s supporters in Jodhpur on Saturday. The self-styled godman has been accused by a 16-year-old girl of sexually assaulting her at his ashram in Rajasthan`s Jodhpur city.
Both mediapersons were bleeding after being beaten by the followers; however, they suffered minor injuries. One of the victims said that Asaram’s supporters were present in large numbers when they were attacked while reporting outside the ashram.
The camera was broken and OB van was also damaged.
Strangely, there were no police personnel outside the ashram. The villagers staying in the vicinity of the self-styled godman’s ashram rescued both the mediapersons.
Meanwhile, Jodhpur DCP Ajay Lamba said that six people have been taken into custody and interrogation is on.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari has condemned the attack on the media.
With Asaram Bapu not appearing before the Jodhpur Police on Friday for questioning in the sexual assault case of a 16-year-old girl, the arrest of the self-styled godman seems imminent.
As the chorus for action against 72-year-old Asaram grew loud, the Jodhpur police rejected his plea for extending the deadline for his appearance which ended on Friday. Police said he is currently located in Bhopal.
A Jodhpur Police team on Tuesday had delivered summons to Asaram in the case involving a minor and asked him to appear before it police for questioning by August 30.
The girl had made a complaint at a police station in Delhi on Aug 20, accusing Asaram Bapu of sexually assaulting her at his ashram.
The girl studied at Asaram Bapu`s ashram in Madhya Pradesh`s Chhindwara district and stayed in a hostel there. She apparently went to meet him in Jodhpur where the alleged assault took place.
