New Delhi: Contrary to expectations, Delhi did not record a huge upsurge of foreign tourist arrivals during the Commonwealth Games and the Melbourne event in 2006 had outdone it by attracting 15,000 more travellers, the government said Thursday.

"The Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006 had attracted 90,000 visitors and it was expected that around 1 lakh visitors (both domestic and foreign) would come to Delhi for Commonwealth Games 2010," Minister of State for Tourism Sultan Ahmed told the Rajya Sabha.

"As per the information received from the Bureau of Immigration, the total number of foreign tourist arrivals at Delhi Airport during 1st to 14th October, 2010 was 75,606," the minister said.

He said the country has achieved 9.9 per cent growth in tourist arrival this year.

"The estimated number of foreign tourist arrivals in India during January to October 2010 was 4.32 million as compared to 3.93 million during the corresponding period of 2009, registering a growth of 9.9 per cent," he said.
