Bhullar case: SGPC to approach UNHRC Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: In yet another twist to Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar's mercy issue, the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC)- the mini-parliament of Sikhs, on Tuesday decided to approach the United Nations Human Rights Commission to save Bhullar from facing the gallows, according to a news report.

Bhullar, whose mercy petition was rejected by President Pratibha Patil recently, is a Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) terrorist sentenced to death for a 1993 car bomb attack in front of the 5, Raisina Road office of the Youth Congress on Sep 11, 1993. The attack claimed 12 lives and injured 29, including the former Youth Congress chief MS Bitta.

The committee has decided to bear all expenses incurred by Bhullar's family in fighting his case and appealed to the gurudwaras across the world for prayers for Bhullar on June 9.

SGPC on Monday had set up a committee to file a review petition for saving Bhullar’s life, which will be headed by the SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar.

"We have formed a high-power committee to look into the case of Bhullar. We would take the help of top lawyers of the Supreme Court of India and would file a review petition before the authorities concerned," said Makkar.

Apparently pained at the politics over execution of the death row convict and Khalistan militant Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar, All India Anti-Terrorist Front Chairman MS Bitta today sought "death wish" for himself, saying he is unable to face "political terrorism" in the country.

"I don't want to be alive any more...I can't face the political terrorism in the country," he said.

Taking a dig at the Congress for backing Bhullar on the clemency demand he said, "I am mentally tortured by the Congress and central intelligence agencies for the past 18 years. I have completely failed to face political terrorism in the country."

Bitta said that if clemency was given to Bhullar then the trend would go on in the cases of Afzal Guru, Kasab and Dara Singh.

Punjab's ruling Shiromani Akali Dal government on Sunday had sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to save Bhullar.

Convicted in 2001, Bhullar's mercy petition was pending with the President since January 2003.

Bhullar was deported to India from Germany in 1995 and has been lodged in the high security ward in the Tihar Jail.

He was sentenced to death on Aug 25, 2001 and the Supreme Court had dismissed his special leave petition on Dec 27, 2006.

If police takes you in custody and forcibly takes your thumb print on a blank paper and then on a typewriter types that you were involved in 2007 bomb blasts, does it proves that you really were involved??

Why his plea should be accepted?

- 133 witnesses of prosecution failed to identify Bhullar or to support so-called confessional statement during trial.

- Capital Sentence awarded to (Prof.) Devinderpal Singh Bhullar was confirmed by the Supreme Court of India in a split decision as justice M. B. Shah, who was heading three judges bench of the Supreme Court had acquitted Bhullar, as there was no sufficient evidence against him.

- He is sentenced to death on the sole basis of confessional statement, alleged to have been made by him, while he was in police custody. Honâble Justice M. B. Shah, while acquitting Bhullar, labeled this statement as âtailor made confessionâ.

Why do the Communally Prejudiced People who want to hang Bhullar are the very people who want to save Dara Singh (One who killed Graham stains and his sons)? Are these people really Nationalists? Then why do they exhibit double standards and make distinction between Hindu terrorists and Non-Hindu terrorists ?

This is India where a Binayak Sen is languished in jail for alleged possession of some literature espousing the cause of Maoists and running medical clinics in Maoist hit regions and on the contrast sikh leaders from Punjab in a dastardly manner requests for commuting death sentence of a convict of Supreme Court and whose mercy petition has been turned down by President after much delay. There is a stark difference between the two cases and the latter case is more shameful and almost on the verge of sedition considering that Bhullar was convicted for terrorism for a separate state. The calls of clemency emanating from sikhs should be treated with contempt it deserves and the architects should be warned of strictest of actions.
