New Delhi: Human Resource Development Minister and Congress leader Kapil Sibal, Monday termed BJP president Nitin Gadkari’s demand of resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former finance minister P Chidambaram as ‘irresponsible’.

Gadkari had said both PM Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P Chidambaram should owe up the moral responsibility for 2G spectrum scam and tender their resignation.

The comments from both the national parties comes after the sensational revelation from former communications minister, A Raja saying that the Prime Minister knew of the equity sale of Swan and Unitech to foreign firms, adding that spectrum allocation was carried out during the tenure of P Chidambaram as Finance Minister.

Hitting out at the main opposition party, Sibal said, “BJP is basing allegations on statement of an accused. An accused can say anything in order to defend himself.”

Clarifying government’s stand on the 2G spectrum allocation issue, the HRD Minister said that UPA had “rectified” the NDA policy.

The Congress leader also clarified that there was no divestment of equity but only dilution of equity was done.

The 47-year-old DMK MP pleaded before Special CBI Judge O P Saini that there was nothing wrong in his decision of not auctioning 2G spectrum and was merely following the policies pursued by his predecessors and the NDA government.
