New Delhi: Congress today attacked BJP for
making "reckless" statements over the issue of Sonia Gandhi
becoming Chairperson of the revived NAC and reminded it that
Gandhi could have become Prime Minister twice if she had so
desired.

Going ballistic against the main opposition party for its
criticism on the issue, party spokesperson Manish Tewari said,
"terming it remote controlling or having direct control
(on the govt)... I think BJP has completely lost its
intellect.

The criticism of BJP is baseless. They are making
reckless statements. I fail to understand why they don`t think
before speaking. They are speaking about a person who could
have become Prime Minister twice -- in 2004 and 2009-- if she
wished."

He said the work done by the NAC during UPA I, when Sonia
Gandhi was its Chairperson, should be take into account.
Tewari said there are important issues on which there is
a need to form an opinion rising above political
considerations and there is also a need that such opinions
reach the government.

AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said, "Sonia
Gandhi could have become Prime Minister any time. To make
allegations that she needs power from any additional quarter
should not be taken seriously at all."

Hailing Gandhi`s contribution, the Congress leader said
the party President has had a key role in the formulation of
policies for the UPA in both its tenures.

"This is a historical role which not only the country
but the entire world realises," Dwivedi said.

Responding to BJP`s criticism on the issue, the Congress
leader said, "they (BJP) have a habit of making negative
comments. There is nothing new in it."
Highlighting the need for the revival of the NAC, the
general secretary said, "the concept of NAC is a tested
concept."

"In any democratic set up, the opinion of a cross section
of society is valuable and NAC serves this purpose. During UPA
I, the utility of NAC was felt by the entire country. Perhaps
because of this, the Central government has taken a decision
to constitute it again," he said.
