New Delhi: The Congress on Monday tried to steer clear the UPA government and the Defence Minister AK Antony of any taint over Army Chief Gen VK Singh’s stunning claim that he had informed Antony of the attempt to bribe him by equipment lobbyist.
Party spokesperson Manish Tiwari said the government would look at the issue and will respond if deemed necessary.
Importantly, Tiwari put the onus on the Army Chief for the “action” that should have been taken on the individual – a recently retired Army official - who tried to bribe him.
“It is a serious, sad matter. It is very unfortunate. If someone had offered him a bribe, I think, as a govt servant, it was his responsibility to file a case against that person,” Tiwari said.
Another spokesperson of the Congress, Rashid Alvi said, “It is a very sensitive matter. He should have given complaint in writing to the Defence Minister.”
The Opposition has already jumped on the issue and has slammed the government over the audacious attempt to bribe the Army Chief.
Both houses of the Parliament witnessed uproarious scenes over the issue with the Opposition demanding a statement from the Defence Minister.
