Can't rule out more border tunnels: Home Secretary

Jammu: The presence of more tunnels along the International Border (IB) with Pakistan cannot be ruled out, Home Secretary RK Singh said on Friday after arriving in Jammu to review the security situation.

"We cannot rule out more tunnels along IB," he told reporters, referring to the discovery a tunnel on the border originating from the Pakistan side last month.

On the recent spurt of firing from Pakistan on Indian border positions, Singh said: "Though such firing from Pakistan is aimed at giving cover to infiltrators into the Indian side, it is mysterious why Pakistan opened fire at a number of locations."

Pakistan has been firing on the Indian side since August 5, with Border Security Force (BSF) too returning the fire. One BSF trooper has been killed in the firings and has led to panic in the border villages.

Sources said the home secretary would tour over a dozen border villages and BSF outposts in the wake of firing by Pakistani Rangers.

The affected areas include Suchetgarh, Pallanwala. Arnia, Abdullian and Chechwal. It was in Chechwal where the 500-metre tunnel was found on July 28.

The Home Secretary would hold meetings with BSF, intelligence, police and civil administration officials.

Later in the day, RK Singh will fly to Army's Northern Command headquarters in Udhampur to meet Army Commander Lt Gen KT Parnaik.

He will then leave for Srinagar, where he will meet Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

As far as Pakistan establishment is concerned nothing can be ruled out.We saw the over taking of J and K. Grabbing of Kargil. Infiltration of Terrorists,by different ways including tunnels,Printing of high quality fake currency and its distribution by different routes. Before we forget the most innovative Terrorists attack on India, through Mumbai in Nov.2008.What we are saying is Pakistan army and its veritable arm the ISI will do anything to dent, damage, harm and destroy the Country and it assets and interests, come what may. This is so authentic that no one can deny but for the establishment which will remain in the denial mode for ever.Even solid evidence is garbage. The security forces have to keep looking for more tunnels. If they don`t,they will be doing so at their own peril and that of the country`s.
