Cartoonist Aseem Trivedi held for `seditious` posters sent to jail Mumbai/New Delhi: Charged with sedition, Cartoonist Aseem Trivedi was on Monday sent to jail for two weeks by a Mumbai court after police said it did not require his custody anymore two days after his arrest that has sparked an outrage.

25-year-old Twivedi himself did not apply for bail in the case until the sedition charge, for which maximum punishment is life imprisonment, was dropped, even as the Maharashtra Government sought to distance itself from the case.

He was arrested in Mumbai on Saturday under IPC Section 124 (sedition), section 66 A of Information Technology Act and section 2 of Prevention of Insults to Nation Honour Act. He was yesterday remanded in police custody till September 16.

Producing Trivedi before a Bandra Court, police said their investigations in the case were over and his custodial interrogation was not needed. The court remanded Trivedi in judicial custody till September 24.

The Kanpur-based artist has been accused of putting up banners mocking the Constitution during a rally of anti- corruption crusader Anna Hazare in Mumbai late last year and posting the same on his website.

Trivedi was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by a member of Republican Party of India, Amit Katarnayea.

"I am not seeking bail because I am proud of whatever I did, and this I will do it repeatedly. I am not a criminal that I should deposit money and seek bail, but till the time the charges of sedition are not dropped against me, I will continue to be in jail", said a statement in Hindi purported to be written by Trivedi in jail.

The statement was circulated outside the Court by volunteers of India Against Corruption(IAC), which organised Hazare's rally last year. Scores of Trivedi's supportes had gathered at the court premises.

Clad in black kurta and jeans, Trivedi was brought to the Court in the afternoon.

As the arrest sparked condemnation by some political parties and activists, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said though the Constitution ensures freedom of expression it also lays down that every citizen must respect the national symbols.

CPI(M) said it was "outrageous" that a sedition charge had been slapped with for drawing cartoons against corruption while the Congress said the arrest of Trivedi was a bit of an overstretch.

"There are certain ground rules which we all have to follow. When the Constitution ensures freedom of expression to each one of us, it also lays down that we as Indian citizens respect all national symbols which represent the Indian nation," Ambika said.

Congress disapproved of the arreest, saying the action was a bit "over-stretched" and "not called for".

At the same time, the party spokesperson Manish Tiwari advocated "reasonable restrictions" to freedom of speech and called for respecting the national emblems.

Terming the arrest of Trivedi a "serious criminal offence", Press Council of India Chairman Markandey Katju said those politicians and police officials behind this should be arrested.

"Because under Section 342 of the PIC, wrongful arrest and confinement serious criminal offences? If you are arresting a person who has not committed a crime, then you are committing a crime. So, these politicians and these police officers should be arrested and made to face trial," he said in Chennai.

BJP alleged that while the UPA government has been involved in corruption like the coal allocation scam, it has also started attacking democratic institutions and free speech.

Prashant Bhushan, lawyer and an IAC member, said sedition charge is constantly being misused by the government and that it should only be used only if someone incites violence. "By no stretch of imagination was Aseem promoting violence."

Arvind Kejriwal, anti-graft activist and also an IAC member, said the way depictions were made in the cartoon were very wrong but this does not make for a case of sedition.

Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil said his department has nothing to do with the complaint filed against Trivedi.

In Kanpur, supporters and family members of Trivedi protested outside the residence of Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal, who assured them of providing all possible help to the cartoonist.

Speaking to PTI, Aseem's father Ashok claimed that his son was innocent and that it was an irony he had been arrested on charges of sedition when his grandfather Reva Shankar Trivedi had been a freedom figher and had gone behind bars for India's freedom struggle.

I think this is not a right way that make cartoons of national symbols, if u wants to expose ur emmotions against Curruption or Crime u can do the cartoons of that particular political parties. ``Four lions or Ashok chkra`` are our national symbols and there are many religions whose emotions or relations closely attached with these symbols. And its possible that the related politicians can rais these points and make voilance........so plz first think and then do............AND ONE MORE THING,``ASHOK CHAKRA or PARLAMENT BUILDING or FOUR LIONS`` ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHATEVER DONE BY INDIA N POLITICIANS...

how can these politicians sit on judgement when they have reduced the parliament to a whorehouse.Their conduct is no better than goondas and criminals. They reduced the constution to a shameful document which hardly carries any meaning now.Reservation is the only thing they are good at.Looting the nation is their profession.India must wake up and root out this cancer or else our future generations face a bleak future where merit will be no consideration and the corrupt politician police civil services nexus will break our back.We will have no say in polity or policybeware.Im planning to leave this godforsaken country forever soon.Good luck India, you will always be close to my heart

Unfortunate & shameful things are happening in Indian democracy, Indian government giving “Biryani” to Pakistani terrorist “Ajmal Kasab” & sending jail to Indian people who is fighting for India. Shameful act by Mumbai police, a politician who delivers always hatred speech & try to divide Indian people, they admire him & other hand slapping charges of Prevention of Insults of National Honour Act, 1971 on cartoonist aseem trivadi. It is true that some cartoons are objectionable but police must not react in this manner. It is totally biased retaliation. I & I think everyone against cartoonist aseem trivadi’s arrast. It is attack on freedom of expression right, it is against Indian democracy. Indian politicians are “playing” with Indian laws. Indian government Pakistani terrorists ko “biryani” khilati hai or Indian public ko “lathiya” khilati hai. Shameful, shameful, shameful… We must raise our voice against injustice. Jai Hind.

Shame on the police for arresting young cartoonist, instead of cracking down on hate mongerers in the political class. Those who make hate speechesthe various political senasare hurting the country`s unity. Act against them. Those who fight against corruption are true heros. Assem should be freeI have faith in our great judiciary will make the right decision.

When Indira Gandhi`s government was in trouble in 1970`s, she was intolerant of any criticism of her government by the opposition party, media and had declared `Emergency`! War was declared on the media and hundreds of journalists newspaper owners were put in jail `without trial`. looks like Sonia Gandhi must be thinking of doing same DECLARING EMERGENCY to protect her government and her ministers!

When Congress party puts hands inside NAtional Flag and make the distorted flag as their own party symbol then why Sonia Gandhi is not arrested?

The action of Police in Mumbai is directed by Mr P Chidamberam the said fiance (loot) minister & dirty mind Sonia Gandhi, her spoon Digvijay Singh. It is the opinion that salaries & perks paid to Police Deptt are out go of peoples earning collected by govt in the name of various taxes, so we can say that Police & Ministers are puppets of criminals & traitors of ruling parties. No way the right common right of public could be barred by way of puppet police authorities on directions by politicle representative ( I am not saying them public representative because r rep only a fraction of public of that particular area not of country. We should now change the rules of election & those candidates who win the 60% of quality votes would be real representative of public ). Action of the Mumbai police is an undamocratic action & Mr Aseem Trivedi should be released without any more delay, because has not committed any crime towards nation. We are also seeing criminals like Lalu Prasad sitting in Parliament, Jagdish Titler leader of congress Gunda force of Sonia Gandhi moving freely. so congress have no right to say a single word to public now & onward, their policies are pushing the country into Civil war.

Politicians are cartoon characters. Those who are bored watching Cartoon channels can tune into Lok Sabha channel.
