CBI arrests five defence accounts officials on graft charges

CBI has arrested five Defence Accounts officials on alleged corruption charges and for accepting bribe of Rs 45,000 from a contractor who executed certain work at various units under Chandimandir based Western Command.

New Delhi: CBI has arrested five Defence
Accounts officials in Chandigarh on alleged corruption charges
and for accepting bribe of Rs 45,000 from a contractor who
executed certain work at various units under the Chandimandir
based Western Command of the Army.

The agency arrested Senior Audit officer Raj Kumar,
Senior Auditors, Deen Dayal Mittal and Devki Nandan and
Assistant accounts officers Devender Singh Dhanoa and
Venugopal working at the office of Principal Controller of
Defence Accounts while demanding and accepting the bribe.

The action came following a complaint by a private
contractor who alleged he had executed various works
pertaining to supply of sports goods/sports surfaces to
different units under the Western Command and had submitted
bills amounting to more than Rs 85 lakh in total to the
various units.

The contractor also alleged the officials of Principal
Controller of Defence Accounts were demanding one per cent of
the bill amount as bribe for auditing the files forwarded by
respective units and issuing the cheques.

Incriminating documents have been seized from the Office
of Principal Controller of Defence Accounts, Sector-9,
Chandigarh.
