CBI cannot win elections for Cong: Jaitely

Jaitley on Wednesday alleged that the Congress can misuse CBI to file cases against its opponents, but the investigating body cannot win elections for the party.

Ahmedabad: Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley on Wednesday alleged that the Congress can misuse CBI to file cases against its opponents, but the investigating body cannot win elections for the party.

"CBI can help Congress in filing of cases against their political opponents but cannot win elections for them," said Jaitley, who was here to campaign for the BJP ahead of the six civic body polls in the state.

His comments came against the backdrop of the arrest of Amit Shah, a close aide of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, by the CBI in Soharabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.

Shah was accused of being the kingpin of conspiracy to eliminate Sheikh, his wife Kausar Bi and key witness Tulsiram Prajapati.

The Congress has tried everything they can do to "defeat"
the Modi government but in vain, so they are misusing CBI now.

People of the state should use elections as a tool to
reject this policy of the Congress, he said.

"CBI officials who are behind such blatant misuse should
also remember that the government at the Centre is not there
for ever. Governments keep on changing and then those
officials will have to give a reply of their actions in
future," Jaitley said.

Congress soft on Maoists

The Congress, after showing initial resilience in the fight against Maoists, is now divided in two groups and not keen to take action against them, Jaitely claimed today.

"Home Minister P Chidambaram had earlier shown great resilience in the fight against Maoists. But soon the Congress got divided on the issue and started speaking in two voices. Now, Chidambaram is saying this is the issue to be tackled by states and Centre will help them," Jaitley said.

Around 200 districts are affected by Maoist menace, and the Naxalites are collecting taxes in over 90 districts, he said addressing a meeting here. State administrations have no role there, Jaitely said.

"At a time when Maoists are killing people and are aiming to overthrow the parliamentary system of the country, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has written in party`s magazine that this is a social issue," Jaitley said.

On the issue of Ayodhya verdict, Jaitley said BJP was the only party that had supported the temple movement.

"BJP`s allies were saying that they are not with them on
the issue of Ram temple, and we have lost elections due to the
issue, but we remained committed to it," Jaitely said.

The BJP leader is in the city to campaign for the October
10 civic elections.

On the Kashmir issue, Jaitley said his party does not
support demand of autonomy to Kashmir.

He said decision taken by first prime minister Jawaharlal
Nehru on Kashmir were responsible for today`s situation in
that state.
