Centre eases norms for LTTE chief`s mother to avail treatment

The Centre has informed the Tamil Nadu government that slain LTTE leader V Prabakaran`s ailing mother Parvathi Ammal could stay at her daughter`s residence in the city and undergo treatment.

Chennai: The Centre has informed the Tamil Nadu government that slain LTTE leader V Prabakaran`s ailing mother Parvathi Ammal could stay at her daughter`s residence in the city and undergo treatment.

The Centre, however, said she would not be allowed to meet representatives of any political parties. But friends and relatives could visit her, an official release said today.

The conditional nod came after the state government informed the Centre in response to a May 18 letter that it had no objection to Parvathi being allowed to stay at her daughter`s residence and avail treatment, it said.

The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka has also been informed about the Centre`s decision.

Responding to a plea by Parvathi, then staying in Malayasia, the Centre in a communication on May 7 had said she could come to Tamil Nadu for treatment on humanitarian grounds but should only stay in the hospital and could meet only those relatives whose names were specified.

But since she left for Sri Lanka from Malaysia, the Centre sought the opinion of the state government on whether the conditions could be relaxed and she could be permitted to stay in her daughter`s house for taking treatment.
