New Delhi: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s remark that rape is prevalent mainly in cities where Indians are deeply influenced by western values and not in rural India on Friday triggered a bitter row evoking sharp reactions from the Centre and various political parties.

Reacting to the RSS chief’s statement, Union Home Secretary RK Singh said, “There can be no basis to distinguish between rural and urban India when it comes to crimes against women.”

"There is no basis for making distinction between India and Bharat," Singh said on the sidelines of a function Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System here.

Meanwhile, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat also lashed out at RSS chief for his remark that fewer cases of rapes occur in 'Bharat' (rural India) than those in urban 'India'.

Karat said that Bhagwat’s remark reflects the mentality, which refuses to accept the reality of caste oppression or class driven exploitation of women.

"A statement like Mr Bhagwat has made only gives strength to the criminals. I think this reflects the mentality, which refuses to accept the reality of caste oppression or class driven exploitation of women," she added.

The RSS has, however, defended its chief, and said that his remarks were misinterpreted.

"The statement of RSS chief should be taken in proper perspective. He has already demanded strict punishment for rapists and even called for death penalty if required," RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav said.

RSS chief had said in Assam that crimes such as rape "hardly take place in Bharat, but they occur frequently in India".

"You go to villages and forests of the country and there will be no such incidents of gang-rape or sex crimes. They are prevalent in some urban belts. Besides new legislations, Indian ethos and attitude towards women should be revisited in the context of ancient Indian values," Bhagwat had told a gathering of RSS workers in Silchar, Assam.

The RSS chief's controversial remark comes days after the death of a 23-year-old woman who was brutally gang-raped on a moving bus in south Delhi Dec 16. The incident has led to loud protests in Delhi and elsewhere to demand justice for the woman and stringent anti-rape laws and more security.

The first statement of RSS Chief Statement in reply to a question needs to be understood in proper context to ascertain what it means. The words like Bharat and India have become the national debate, reason is nothing more than a habit to comment on every things without going into between the lines but sometimes Media goes more than required between the lines and takes out it own form meaning. In context of RSS Chief Statement,If Media shows only first sentence of of his statement than everybody will criticize it but if it shows fully than We need to think to amend our constitution and state Bharat is a union of Bharat.Bharat is nothing more than a set of values in which we respect women, treat them equal, like to work with them, and worship them as Sister,Mother,Wife because of their humble behaviour and as an Indian we sometime objectified them which results in not imparting the proper value to younger generation. And then the cascading effect of India and Economic inequality result in women brutality. I challenge to media to air his full comment If they do that they will lose the people trust for wrongly quoting one in millennium sentence.

Mohan Bhagwat has not committed any crime. He is saying what he feels and why is this hoo- halla? After the Delhi incident, many people are saying many things and why to run after them ? Revealing dresses, Bollywood films, sexy dances and advertisements are not the route causes of these crimes. Death penalties or any other punishments are not going to stop crimes. Kamandanam na Bhayam na Lajjam( a person who is sexually aroused has no shame or fright). Leave alone all these dresses and films. What about the internet pornography which is right there in the pocket of the criminals which is more harmful than anything else.Pointless talking makes no senses. One should take care of herself and should not get into potentially dangerous situations. Crime is very much a part of life and it cannot be stopped by any means.

I fully agree with what Mr.Bhagwat said, India is a country that has given the highest respect to women and motherhood.Due to increase of western influence our society is losing focus and trying to follow the western concept in every thing. Its high time we start teaching moral & cultural values to the next generation. It is up to every parent to teach the religious values to children s and make better future for India.

yes . Bhagavat said it right. There is lot of difference between Bharat and India. If we see it as a physical entity both are same. But the emotional and physcological feeling make India different from Bharat. What Sri Bhagavat Ji said is `` If we as such emotional and Ethical, then there cant be any rape cases ``. Telling I love my India became fashion. But telling Vandemataram or Bharatmataki Jai became old fashion. Tell your sons/brothers to see all the girls as your sisters it will sure look odd for him. But if u say that they are your friends then he feel happy. This thought should change. Instead of saying Sri Bhagavat Ji to go to grassroot ,we need go to grassroots of his comments. Both India or Bharat has both Villages and Cities.

The Indians were never exposed to the bombardment of sensuality before as in the recent times. TV, newspapers, media, Bollywood, billboards, mobiles, internet practically everything promotes lust and greed. It is explained in the sastras that the attraction between male and female is like between fire and ghee (clarified butter). The fire will increase with the degree of amount of ghee is poured into that. Similarly if the sexual impulse is promoted everywhere then what can you expect? The traditional Indian culture was so elevated that women were seen as mothers and was given respect as they also acted as mothers but in the modern times as Indians have become ``overly intelligent`` and have left their glorious culture to adopt hedonist and barbaric culture of the West. The Western culture is no better than animal culture as they don`t even discriminate between mother, sister and wife. If the same culture is going to take over India then no matter what amount of laws that you make it is not going to stop. The more you pour ghee into the fire, it will burn and more you mix two sexes in the name of so-called equality the fire of lust will burn and will have effects time to time as we have seen recently.
