New Delhi, June 11: Chairman of Supreme
Court-appointed panel on anti-ragging measures R K Raghavan
today said certain institutions need to be "severely
penalised" for their "indifference" to the menace.
"Certain regulatory bodies have come up with stricter
anti-ragging measures. But the implementation has been a
problem. There are institutions which are still indifferent
towards this issue," he said.
Raghavan`s views assume significance in the wake of a
series of incidents of students either dying or committing
suicide after being ragged.
"The errant institutions need to be penalised severely
for not implementing the anti-ragging measures," he said.
An engineering student recently committed suicide by
jumping before a running train in Warangal district of Andhra
Pradesh. According to a suicide note recovered from his
pocket, he took the extreme step as he was unable to bear the
ragging by his seniors at the private college.
