Chidambaram condemns dishonour killings

Home Minister Chidambaram says dishonour killings bring disgrace and disrepute to the country.

Madurai: Condemning dishonour killings, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Saturday said such things only brought disgrace and disrepute to the country.

"Such (dishonour) killings only brought disgrace and disrepute to the country...In some places parents removed their children from schools if the mid-day meal is cooked by Dalits...What use will the country`s nine percent economic growth or the foreign exchange reserve of USD 300 billion if social atrocities like untouchability continued in the country," he said at the birth centenary celebrations of Congress leader P Kakkan here.
"India will get real independence only if social evils are eradicated from the heart," he said.
