New Delhi: Anna Hazare’s close associate Shanti Bhushan said on Thursday said that people of the country are feeling empowered and appealed citizens to join the anti-corruption movement.

“It is for the first time that people of the country are feeling empowered. They are feeling that their voice matters and that those in legislatures and Parliament have to listen to them,” Bhushan said.

“In democracy it is not only the Parliament. Democracy is people’s voice, every political party and politician has to hear people’s voice,” he added.

Bhushan appealed that everybody should join the movement now that Anna has got 14-day permission to fast at Ramlila Maidan.

The noted lawyer also observed that the tremendous support for Anna all the across the nation is reminiscent of the Independence movement spearheaded by Mahatma Gandhi.

The support for Anna is not just limited to India alone; Indians abroad have also raised the banner in support of Anna. “There were protests in 45 cities in America and also in Canada, Britian and elsewhere,” he said.

On the way forward, he said, “This is the first step much more needs to be done,” quickly adding that protests have to be peaceful.
